Arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints, causing pain and stiffness that can worsen with age. There are two common types: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cushion between the bones of the joint wears down, thus causing bone-on-bone interaction. As a result of this continuous rubbing, the joint becomes inflamed, resulting in pain, swelling, and loss of mobility.

Rheumatoid arthritis, on the other hand, is when the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues, causing the joints to become painful and swollen. Over time, deformities of the joint can also occur. Potential treatment for arthritis includes

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Steroid injections
  • Viscosupplements
  • PRP/Stem cell therapy
  • Genicular nerve blocks
  • Cryotherapy (Iovera)
  • Radiofrequency ablation

Back Massage

Neck and Back Pain

Pain within the spine (whether cervical, thoracic, or lumbar) may be a result of muscle pain, whiplash, joint pain, or nerve pain. The spine is the framework responsible for stability, flexion, extension, rotation, and weight-bearing, so it is not surprising to experience some form of back pain within your lifetime. However, there are times when the cause of your neck and back pain is a result of continuous

  • Muscle strain
  • Facet joint disease
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Disc degeneration
  • Disc herniation
  • Other structural damages from traumatic events or results of aging

Depending on the type of pain you are experiencing, a thorough exam with potential imaging studies can narrow down the pain source and allow for possible treatment. Potential treatment for back pain may include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Trigger point injections
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • PRP/stem cell therapy
  • Facet joint/medial branch nerve blocks
  • Sacroiliac joint injections
  • Radiofrequency ablation

Headache

Migraines and Headaches

Millions of Americans suffer from headaches within their lifetime. Some suffer from the occasional headache, and others experience headaches almost daily. These are considered chronic migraines.

Headaches are classified based on symptoms, triggers, location, and many other diagnostic factors. Determining the classification of your headache may require a thorough physical exam, keeping a detailed headache journal, and imaging studies. Depending on the results of the exam, journaling, and imaging studies, a specific treatment plan can be formulated for you.
Potential treatments include:

  • Avoidance of triggers (i.e., foods, scents, stressors, etc.)
  • First-line medication trials
  • Specific nerve blocks (trigger point injections, occipital nerve blocks, cryotherapy (Iovera), radiofrequency ablation, and ketamine infusions)

Peripheral Nerve Pain

Peripheral Nerve Pain

Peripheral nerve pain can be a result of diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, postherpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, nerve entrapment, crush injuries, chemical injuries, amputations, and many other conditions.

Depending on the cause of your peripheral nerve pain, there are treatments that are available to help minimize the nerve pain and help to get you a better level of functioning. A thorough examination, and in some cases, the assistance of ultrasound, may be utilized to identify specific nerve involvement.

  • Medication therapy
  • Peripheral nerve blocks
  • Trigeminal nerve block
  • Hydrodissection
  • Cryotherapy (Iovera)
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Sympathetic nerve blocks
  • Biofeedback therapy
  • Ketamine infusions

Pain Syndromes

Pain Syndromes

There are several pain syndromes that cause generalized pain in various areas of the body.  Fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) are just two common syndromes. While the pain varies in origin, it can still become centralized, meaning there is a disconnect in how the brain and the nerve pathways are functioning.

Pinpointing the pain generator and treatment is often difficult and challenging, not just for the patient but for the provider as well. There rarely is a single treatment that is effective alone. That is why it is essential for the provider to gain trust and understand their patients when dealing with such syndromes.

Potential treatment include:

  • Therapeutic massage
  • Acupuncture
  • Meditation
  • Ketamine infusions
  • Sympathetic nerve blocks

Sports Injuries

Sports Injuries

Sports-related injuries are unique in that any part of the body can suffer an acute injury. These types of injuries may resolve without treatment or require intervention. Broken bones and torn ligaments can become problematic over time, thus requiring some form of intervention. However, even with successful intervention, ”old” sports injuries can cause lifelong suffering and limit one’s ability to function over time.

When I speak with my patients about their pain, I often hear “old sports injury” as the reason for seeking treatment. Some have had surgical interventions, and others have chosen not to address surgery as an option. Regardless, their pain has brought them to a place where they are tired of suffering and not being able to function at the level they desire.

There are many treatment options for the elite athlete, serious athlete, and the “weekend warrior” of various sports disciplines. Potential treatment options include:

  • Various steroid injections
  • PRP/stem cell therapy
  • Cryotherapy (Iovera)
  • Various nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • Hydrodissection
